On 30 January, the carrier Eagle in the Clyde was put on four hours notice to be ready should the battlecruisers break out into the Atlantic. As each day’s reconnaissance reports were received, it became clear that the time was approaching when the battlefleet would be ready to sail.

11 Group was in the air at 1020hrs. It was flown by two Spitfires of 91 Squadron from Hawkinge airfield. Leading the sortie was Squadron Leader Oxspring with Sergeant Beaumont flying with him in the second Spitfire. By this time the weather was closing in with low cloud and squally showers. Visibility was poor when, some 7 miles off Boulogne, Oxspring noticed two lines of E-boats totalling nine craft moving eastwards along the Channel.
