Multi-Core Cache Hierarchies (Synthesis Lectures on Computer Architecture)

A key determinant of total process functionality and gear dissipation is the cache hierarchy given that entry to off-chip reminiscence consumes many extra cycles and effort than on-chip accesses. additionally, multi-core processors are anticipated to put ever greater bandwidth calls for at the reminiscence process. a majority of these concerns make it vital to prevent off-chip reminiscence entry through enhancing the potency of the on-chip cache.

NPar Sweet Spots Now that we have provided a brief overview of the benefits and tradeoffs of nPartitions, we will provide some guidance on a few "sweet spot" solutions that allow you to get the benefits while minimizing the impact of the tradeoffs. First of all, if you are doing consolidation of multiple workloads onto a cell-based server, you will want to set up at least two nPars. It would just not make sense to have the option of hardware-fault isolation and not take 56 57 advantage of it. You might want to set up more nPars so you can provide hardware isolation between mission-critical applications.

This is illustrated in Figure 2-20. 50 51 Figure 2-20. Security Compartments Isolate Groups of Processes from Each Other The processes in each compartment can freely communicate with each other and can freely access files and directories assigned to the partition, but no access to processes or files in other compartments is permitted unless a rule has been defined that allows that specific access. Additionally, the network interfaces, including pseudo-interfaces, are assigned to a compartment. Communication over the network is restricted to the interfaces in the local compartment unless a rule is defined that allows access to an interface in another compartment.

What this means is that memory allocation is done from memory locally on the cell, where the process that is allocating the memory is running. Interleaving is better when large blocks of memory are being accessed in short periods of time. Workloads that can take advantage of this include statistical analysis, data warehousing and supply chain optimization. Cell-local memory is best for workloads that do lots of small memory accesses, such as online transaction processing and web applications. In addition, you can assign both cell-local and interleaved memory in each of your cells and each of your nPars.
