In this connection it has to be underlined that the new approach is in several ways in conflict with the established academic tradition at the university. For both historical and ideological reasons the socio-cultural sector—and therefore also the socio-ecological perspective—has become a blind spot in the universe of contemporary scientific observation. Noone who has experienced the harsh conditions of innovative social and cultural research at the university will be surprised at the relatively low level of sociocultural competence and knowledge in society at large, or at the fact that its societal application is so far behind that of natural science and technology.
