The Sound is normally home to several species of marine mammals, including sea lions, whales, seals, porpoises, and sea otters; many species of land mammals, hundreds of species of birds, including swans, cormorants, millions of shorebirds, and over a thousand bald eagles.
The ship hit a rock, then fifteen minutes later grounded on Bligh Reef. The reef punched eight holes in her hull, spilling a quarter of a million barrels of oil (about 11 million gallons) into the clear waters of the Sound. Who was hurt by the accident?
