This essay is indicative of Professor Hill's status as the foremost living expert on the life and times of Joseph Smith, having spent many years collecting various historical and primary source materials for what was to be his own book-length biography on the Mormon leader. 9 The fourth essay, entitled "Fawn McKay Brodie at the Intersection of Secularism and Personal Alienation" and written by Mario S. De Pillis, former president of the Mormon History Association and professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, considers No Man Knows My History within the context of the larger American society of the early to mid-twentieth century.
First, No Man Knows My History quickly established itself as an extremely controversial work, evident from the time of the book's initial publication. An early reviewer, Herbert O.
