52 The physical structure of the Amish community also reinforces church teachings. Amish settlements, collections of Amish homes in proximity to each other, are organized socially and geographically into congregations or church districts—that is, a certain number of families who will meet together for worship. The size of the church district is limited by the distance that can be easily traveled with horse and buggy and by the number of families. Like the early Anabaptists, who worshipped secretly in private homes to avoid arrest, most Amish groups do not have separate meeting houses; church services are held in family homes or, when warm enough, in barns, so the congregation cannot be too large.

Because one party to the schism does not shun the other, a split provides relief for tensions that may have been building over a long period and allows smaller, more unified groups to emerge. Schism within a church district divides families and ruptures work and social ties. During one split, for example, one Amish woman compared the emotional turmoil to that suffered by a divorcing couple. Nevertheless, a schism may be a healthy application of Anabaptist principles in the face of pressure, both from the dominant, non-Amish society and from forces within the group.

There is also a benefit auction every year to support the special-education class. “We have a dinner to help pay for our school,” noted one mother. ” All these events depend on the participation of non-Amish neighbors. There are further consequences. For example, supported by wages and less tied to the land, the Clymer-area Old Order Amish are able to engage in activities for which there would be less time and acceptance in more conservative communities. One Clymer Amish carpenter, whose work takes him regularly to the Chautauqua Institution, is also an artist who sells his paintings locally.
