She participated in the Battle of the Java Sea and the March 1, 1942 action against American and British ships. She was assigned to the Aleutians Guard Force as part of the Midway operation. On June 25, 1942, she was sunk by the American submarine Nautilus near Yokosuka, with no survivors. Yudachi: She was assigned to Destroyer Division 4 and conducted operations as other ships in this unit during the initial period of the war. By August 1942, she was committed to operations in the Solomons. She participated in 13 transport missions and five sweep missions to Guadalcanal.

She survived that operation but was sunk by a mine while under American carrier air attack near Maizuru on July 30, 1945. Hatsushimo was the last Japanese destroyer sunk in the war.
