For example, 1935 saw the Anglo-German naval treaty, double-dealing over sanctions on Italy and the start of rearmament. In that year a national government was re-elected with a huge majority on a platform which included a commitment to ‘do what is necessary to repair the gaps in our defences’, which would ‘undoubtedly bring a considerable volume of work to the depressed areas’. 69 From 1935 through to March 1939 appeasement and rearmament marched together: at the time of the Munich agreement British arms production was accelerating; the successful resolution to the crisis with the removal from Czechoslovakia of the Sudetenland gave Hitler’s Germany another part of the former Austro-Hungarian empire.
