The Absarokas are a remarkable exception to the orogeny process: These mountains are actually volcanic debris masquerading as a mountain range. When the original material of the Absaroka Range was first laid down by volcanic action in Yellowstone, it had the appearance of a high plateau. Water, wind and ice later carved it into the shape of mountains. Heart Mountain is a flat-topped mountain peak sitting on the prairie a few miles southeast of the Absaroka volcanics.
