The school also served families from surrounding areas of private terraced housing. The 331 children, organized in year groups, were mostly from white working-class families. There were very firm school structures in place with strong central control emanating from the (male) headteacher and a tightly defined timetable. Staff turnover was very rapid reflecting the conflict which existed between the staff and the headteacher. A new (male) head was appointed in Year 6 of the project. Meadway First School was an open-plan single-storey primary school built in the 1970s.

This made it possible to request funding within the relatively limited budget of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) research grants scheme. Some of the problems which arose for the team because of the need to obtain funding in this way are discussed in the concluding section of this chapter. 1 which provides an overview and illustrates both the longitudinal and cross-sectional features of the research design. In each phase of the project there were two rounds of interviews and questionnaires to a large sample of teachers, and two rounds of classroom and assessment studies using multiple data-gathering methods.

At a time when they had so many other demands and pressures on their time it is particularly remarkable that none of the schools wanted to withdraw from the project.
