Which were, however, overshadowed by the rise of jazz; dance perhaps attracted the most attention, thanks to the controversial productions of the Ballets Russes Judi Loach 53 and the Ballets Suédois, and was certainly the most pervasive promoter of modernity, through eurhythmics and other forms of lyrical physical exercise, and the vogue for tango and fox-trot. In all these fields artists, in an often painful awareness of the social and cultural dislocation induced by the urban reality of industrial society—the ‘profond bouleversement de l’époque machiniste’, as Le Corbusier called it (1929, 60)—expressed their dissatisfaction with the preferred subjects and forms alike of their academic masters, as these seemed wholly irrelevant to the new conditions.

When Töpffer’s works did go to print, his publisher and cousin Jacques-Julien Dubochet would often use Parisian artists such as Girardet, Francais, Daubigny or Cham for the final version of the vignettes (Kaenel 1996, 165). In the case of the 1840 edition of Dr Festus, Töpffer produced the text in a separate edition from that of the images (Kaenel 1996, 171-72). In short, the view that modern bande dessinée studies present of Rodolphe Töpffer is very much a retrospective one, certainly not a reflection of the analysis of the time.
