Wavell left Cairo for the desert and, in order to stem Rommel’s advance, he ordered O’Connor to leave Cairo to join General Neame, the British commander in Cyrenaica, as an advisor. Rommel’s intent was to cut the Cyrenaica bulge, the reverse of what O’Connor had achieved only weeks 1. 5 March, at Wingate’s 3rd Indian Division (Special Force) HQ at Lalaghat in India, a hastily arranged photoreconnaissance reveals teak logs stretched across the proposed Chindit air-landing field, ‘Piccadilly’. After a meeting, Wingate and his 77th Brigade commander, Brigadier Calvert, agreed that the glider landings scheduled for later that night should be diverted to another landing field, ‘Broadway’.
