One of the critical forks in the road for all Christian traditions in North America reflects the growing gap between those that reflect a strong medieval European cultural and religious heritage and those that reflect a "Made in America" democratic and religious culture. The most highly visible examples in the United States of a religious culture reflecting the medieval European world are the Roman Catholic Church and The United Methodist Church. Both are organized on the assumptions that institutions can be trusted, but the people, especially the laity and congregational leaders, cannot be trusted.
