And in the presidential campaign of 1908, the candidates’ media advisers (that too would have been an unknown term back then) saw the opportunity to bring the appeals of their candidates into homes and stores coast to coast on phonograph records. The Mannequins’ Debate For that campaign, phonograph dealers dressed up mannequins of William Howard Taft, Roosevelt’s chosen Republican successor, and 40 Presidential Voices William Jennings Bryan, the Great Commoner, the Silver-Tongued Orator of the Platte, and we might add, the Master of the Catch Phrase, carrying the Democratic nomination for the third time.
Lincoln was a changed man and a changed speaker when he delivered his second inaugural, the most profound and poetic of all inaugural addresses. It was much shorter than the first. Indeed, at 701 words, it was shorter than that single long sentence of Adams’s speech.
