It is clear that there may be both variation in levels of support for parties expressing Euroscepticism and variation in the levels of importance attached to the European issue for voters in those party systems. However, all of this begs the important and difficult question that remains: How do we measure the salience of the issue of European integration in different party and political systems, and how can we differentiate between types of salience (public salience whereby populations express Euroscepticism, the salience of Europe for party competition, and the salience of the European issue in determining election outcomes)?
1. Before discussing these findings, three caveats must be mentioned. First, the majority of the data is judgemental opinion by party politics specialists. Therefore it might be over-subjective and may privilege the causal power of electoral and party system variables over those of state and administrative structures. Second, ten cases represents a relatively small N and any findings cannot easily be extrapolated out to the wider European polity.
