Alphonso Mingana's researches show that as early as 225 there were more than twenty bishoprics in northern Iraq and in Persia, one of them among the Dailams near the Caspian Sea. The large majority of the "Nestorian" Christians who lived in Sasanian territories were converts from Zoroastrianism and therefore of Persian and not Syrian or Semitic origin. The enmity of Byzantium toward them meant that the Persians trusted them more, whereas previously their doctrines were identified with the Byzantine enemy.
