Extra time spent here helped ensure trouble-free construction. The fuselage halves were then ‘tacked’ together with spots of superglue at intervals of 6–12mm along the join. With the fuselage secured, Tamiya Liquid Polystyrene Cement was brushed along the join line. This step adds significant strength to the assembly. Finally, when the liquid glue had completely dried, another coat of thin superglue was applied over the top of the join. This final adhesive coat fills any tiny holes, and offers a hard surface for sanding, scribing and polishing.
On 14 November 1944, Sergeant Pilot Leonard Waters was posted to 78 Squadron RAAF, flying P-40N Kittyhawks from Noemfoor in New Guinea. 78 Squadron was later based on Morotai, then finally at Tarakan. No after-market items were employed in this detailing exercise. All the elements were scratch-built from sheet and strip styrene, various plastic shapes, brass rod, aluminium tube and electrical wire. The interior of the rear fuselage was first fitted out with horizontal brass wire stringers and vertical ribs from plastic strip. This detail was only applied to the starboard side, as the port fuselage sidewall would not be visible through the radio hatch. Scrap styrene and plastic shapes were used to create electrical boxes, the oxygen system and radio gear.
