I wanted to depict this Marder at the end of winter, the whitewash camouflage worn and scraggy, and the tracks and wheels full of mud. Painting The first step is to apply a base coat of German grey. As the proceeding coats of paint would be attacked heavily in the weathering process, I used lacquer-based paint. Tamiya Mini Sprays are lacquer and spray beautifully. I gently heated the can in a bowl of hot water for five minutes, and applied three or four light coats until the colour built up on all surfaces.

I chose to perform this step kind of backwards, as decals don’t stand up too well to being taped over, they tend to pull off the model. So I masked off a circle on each side of the Marder, and sprayed some Tamiya German Grey, over which I applied a plain white balkenkreuz decal to each hull side once the paint was dry. Simple decals applied. I kept the markings few as I wanted to highlight the winter paint finish. Post shade applied. Note how the white paint is starting to look dirtier than before.

This really dirties up the paint nicely. ). I applied lots of brown pastel chalk dust to the interior floor, and finalised the weathering process by applying lots of paint chips and wear with a 2B pencil. The transmission was weathered with a thick oily wash of turpentine and artist oil paint, and then a metallic sheen was added with a 2B pencil. The radios were left out of the interior, supposedly scavenged by maintenance crew to stop them falling into the hands of the Allies. Internal hull wall.
