Sir Richard Jebb (1841-1905) was once the phenomenal British classical pupil of the second one half the 19th century. This memoir, released by way of his widow in 1907, provides a rounded photograph of the guy mainly remembered this day for his versions of the performs of Sophocles, yet who used to be additionally instrumental in founding the British colleges of Archaeology in Athens and Rome and the British Academy, and who as a Member of Parliament for Cambridge collage performed an important half within the politics of his day, specially in academic reform at either tuition and college point. Extracts from his letters and speeches convey the power and exuberance which he dropped at his many jobs, and a feeling of humour that can no longer be too obtrusive in his released paintings yet was once remembered by way of his scholars as a characteristic of the lectures which secured his acceptance as an outstanding instructor.
