Their concern, however, was rather with family finances than with kin relationships, although they showed a pronounced preference for the large family, and seem all to have supposed that decline in the size of the coresidential domestic group was a sign of general social disintegration.

In the households of craftsmen, the industrial producers and service workers of that era, and in those engaged in commerce, everything went forward within this living space; such households made up fully a third of all domestic groups in pre-industrial England. Since the insistence is on residence, the full term to be defined is the coresident domestic group, and our interest is in changes in the structure and size of that group over time. Even when spelt out in this way, the definition of the domestic groups is by no means sharp and unambiguous in all societies, as Jack Goody shows so plainly in Chapter 3.
