Comte 1975 [1830–42]: 132) One of Comte’s frequent correspondents was John Stuart Mill (1806–73). Mill was the first to elaborate systematically the comparative sociological method in A System of Logic, first published in 1843. Mill’s method is used to explain a social phenomenon, say, student attrition. Mill starts with two methods for identifying the causes of the phenomenon from circumstances that precede it. One method is to compare systems in which there are high rates of student attrition and see what they have in common.

This approach, therefore, sacrifices the explanatory power of the model for the explanatory power of mathematics. A second problem with the method of agreement and also with the method of difference is that they cannot identify multiple causation, which Mill called plural causation (Ragin 1987). Student attrition may be the outcome of either poorly prepared students or of poor teaching. There may be instances where student attrition has resulted only from poorly prepared students and other instances when it results only from poor teaching.
