Pierson’s assessment of the past decades differed radically from that of prominent contemporaries. He ignored situations that alarmed other conservatives, and he disagreed with lib erals who welcomed the advances of modem science and the 40 / “PENTECOSTAL FIRE" liberation of Christianity from the obscurantism of the past. His assessment was positive, and he published it under the title Forward M ovements o f the Last H alf Century. ” In spite of the crises around him, Pierson exuded confidence.
As before, the experience had many designations, but increasingly it connoted a dual reception of cleansing and power. And it was often accompanied by physical manifestations. J. W.
