Pierson’s assessment of the past decades differed radically from that of prominent contemporaries. He ignored situations that alarmed other conservatives, and he disagreed with lib erals who welcomed the advances of modem science and the 40 / “PENTECOSTAL FIRE" liberation of Christianity from the obscurantism of the past. His assessment was positive, and he published it under the title Forward M ovements o f the Last H alf Century. ” In spite of the crises around him, Pierson exuded confidence.
As before, the experience had many designations, but increasingly it connoted a dual reception of cleansing and power. And it was often accompanied by physical manifestations. J. W. Home noted: ‘I t makes some people boisterous in their manifestations, and other people still. ”18 Holiness lyrics that later Pentecostals often sang described its physical effects in popular terms with which many readily identified: We find many people who can’t understand Why we are so happy and free; We’ve crossed over Jordan to Canaan’s fair land, And this is like heaven to me.

The writing and preaching ministries of Keswick leaders like Frederick Brotherton Meyer, Andrew Murray, and G. Campbell Morgan evoked response throughout the evangelical world. The Keswick message came to stress holiness and spiritual power through a life of overcoming. The secret was simple: Let in the Overcomer, and He will conquer thee. Thy broken spirit taken in sweet captivity Shall glory in His triumph, and share His victory.
