With Strings, we can see groups of reversals indicating just that - another method of grouping the cards. This is useful when there are only two court cards and one of them is reversed. We might see the reversed cards associated with the reversed Court card, even if there appears to be no other connection. The bottom line is to use the reversed meanings for cards only when appropriate. As in life, there are many shades of grey; using these techniques gives us the choice of when and where we use them.
THE MAGUS, AEON, THE TWOS AND THE KNIGHTS 21 Overview of Reading the Cards Basic Strings In this book we have Strings of cards rather than positions for cards in a reading that correspond to the Past, Present, Future, Health, Work, Love, etc (The Celtic Cross Spread is a good example). The length of a String can vary from around five or six cards to over thirty. Rather than impose an arbitrary meaning on each position, the topic of a string not only depends on the cards in the string, but also on the position and relationship of the cards to each other.
Tree of Life Missing numbers indicate a lack that may or may not need to be fulfilled by the placement of the missing cards in the other Strings. The interpretations are speculative,but we can consider them to be the lack of what four of a kind would represent. The larger the number of cards in a String, the more significant any omissions will be. The information can be used to see if particular parts of the Tree of Life are missing. The Pillar of Severity is composed of the 3’s, 5’s and 8’s. The lack of 3’s and 5’s would indicate a weak Pillar of Severity suggesting that the Querent is not controlling what is going on around him or her.
