19 “The friends of Dr. Hanks hurried to cover up the shame of his conduct, but the people will not be fooled,” wrote Hayden in a scathing editorial on October 10, 1889. “They know that something happened that unbecomes the character and position of a Minister of the Gospel. They understand that the Texas Baptist and Herald desires to publish the truth and will not let things of this sort go unheeded. ”20 Yet, the pastor, whose wife was deeply disturbed by the ongoing conflict, found no relief. The rumors, despite parishioners’ promises to relent, would not die.
In June 1883 Hayden purchased the Texas Baptist from Buckner.
